Friedman and Obama
I think that both Friedman and Obama have good intentions but I don’t know if it’s entirely possible to achieve what they are asking for. I think the whole idea of ‘heeding the admonition to avoid indifference to suffering outside our borders’ is something you have to look at case by case. That is basically what we are doing with the war in Iraq, and look at how many people are against that, and although a lot of good has come of it, you can’t ignore the American lives that were lost and families torn apart. On the other hand I think there are programs and organizations that take far less drastic measures to help out other countries. There’s a brand of shoes called Tom’s. Every pair that someone buys, a pair goes to a kid in Africa. I think that is a good way of helping out other countries. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. I agree with Friedman that we need to encourage others to develop a more positive imagination, because with out the positive there is only the negative, and negative imaginations as we have seen can lead to awful things like September 11th. I’m not exactly sure how to encourage positive imaginations but maybe by being an example of positive thinking to all those around you. Let all your ideas be positive ones. Be thinking about how you can help and lift others up rather than how you can get revenge or put others down.
